VMware App Volumes 2.10 – What’s New

Today VMware released updated version of it’s realtime applicationn delivery software VMware App Volumes 2.10. With this release App Volumes start it support for VMware Horizon View 6.2.

Here is the summery of what’s new from VMware website:

  • Windows 10 Support: Classic Windows 10 applications can be delivered through AppStacks to Windows 10 virtual desktops. End­users can install classic Windows applications on Writable Volumes when they are logged in to Windows 10 virtual desktops. Installation of universal applications is not supported on AppStacks and Writable Volumes. App Store applications are not supported.
  • Enabling vMotion: The AVM_PROTECT_VOLUMES=”1″ environment variable can be set on the App Volumes Manager to enable vMotion and to provide protection against accidental deletion of volumes when all ESX hosts are of version 6.0 Update 1 and 5.5 Update 4. vMotion of Storage is not supported.
  • vSphere 6 Update 1 support: This release of App Volumes includes support for vSphere 6 Update 1.
  • Horizon 6.2 support: This release of App Volumes supports Horizon 6.2.
  • Storage Group management: An option to mark a storage as Not Attachable is now available. App Volumes Manager will ignore this storage while mounting
  • volumes.
  • Expand existing writable volumes: Size of an existing writable volume can be expanded through the App Volumes Manager. This change will take effect after the
  • next user login.
  • App Volumes templates: All App Volumes templates are now created with the volume attribute set to NODEFAULTDRIVELETTER to ensure they are not
  • automatically assigned a letter by the Windows MountVol utility.

Apart from these App Volumes Broker Integration Service (used to use for faster user login in Horizon View environment) is no longer required in version 2.10.
This new version not yet support SQL server 2014, eventhough most of the VMware product is currently support SQL Server 2014 database.

Supported Infrastructure for App Volumes 2.10:

  • VMware ESX 5.0.x, 5.1.x, 5.5.x, 6.0 and vCenter (ESX/vCenter must be the same version)
  • Horizon View 5.x, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, and 6.2
  • Citrix XenDesktop 5.5, 5.6, and 7.X

VMware App Volumes Manager:

  • Microsoft Server 2008 R2 and 2012 R2
  • Microsoft SQL Server/Express 2008
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2012 when App Volumes Manager is installed on Server 2012 R2

VMware App Volumes Agent:

  • Windows 10
  • Windows 7 32/64 bit
  • Windows 8.1 32/64 bit
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 and 2012 R2 for RDSH
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 and 2012 R2 for VDI
